BOOK SUMMARY
Turning Corners brings together a collection of 150 stunning works executed by Gerard Byrne, Ireland's foremost Modern Impressionist, during the three Lockdown phases of the Covid 19 pandemic, spanning the period Spring 2020 to Summer 2021.
Reproduced in spectacular colour, these paintings confirm Byrne's innate talent, each one a testament to his victory over initial negativity, one that led him to embrace the curtailment of certain freedoms and, ultimately, enjoy an unconfined explosion of creativity.
From the rooftops and residential roads of Ranelagh to the cherry blossoms of Herbert Park; from Leeson Street and the Grand Canal to the National Botanic Gardens and St Stephen's Green; from the seaside villages of Dalkey and Sandycove to the Dingle Peninsula on Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way; Byrne has given us a pictorial record of an
extraordinary time as seen through the eyes of one who discovered beauty and complexity around every corner, despite strict travel limits.
The success of Byrne's artistic journey was further amplified by the overwhelmingly positive reaction of his local community, bringing with it affirmation of the powerfully curative effect that art can have in times of great challenge.
A feast for art enthusiasts, Turning Corners is also a book for those interested in architecture and design; for historians, nature-lovers, and gardeners; for those familiar with Dublin city and for those eager to learn more about Ireland's capital.
The specific grouping of the works, along with explanatory text by author Susan Stairs, gives narrative and context to the collection, resulting in a volume that is as readily informative and accessible as it is visually magnificent.
