In Perspective: Gerard Byrne Gallery | Trinity St, Dublin
To look. And then to look again.
For Gerard Byrne, the world is an ongoing source of material, from the architectural character of Dublin to the changing Irish coastline, from the human figure to the stillness of an interior. Across a practice spanning almost four decades, these subjects have taken on countless forms, each shaped by the artist’s response to what lies before him.
Bringing together cityscapes, figurative works, still lifes and seascapes, In Perspective explores the breadth of Byrne’s artistic vision. Rather than following a single subject or chronology, the exhibition draws connections across places, people and moments, revealing the instincts and preoccupations that run through his work.
Colour becomes a means of expression; a brushstroke carries the trace of a gesture; light alters the weight and feeling of a scene. Byrne’s paintings are defined by this interplay between the observed world and the act of painting itself. What emerges is not simply a record of a place or subject, but an interpretation of its presence.
The exhibition invites us to consider how perspective shapes what we see, and how the same world can yield entirely different impressions depending on where we stand. Moving between works, unexpected affinities emerge, and individual paintings take on new meanings in the company of others.
Free admission. All welcome.
